A12 Proposed Ban to Stop Lorry Drivers Overtaking

A proposed ban to stop HGV drivers from overtaking on the A12 has been branded a "stupid" idea by haulage firms.

The call to the Highways Agency for changes came from Councillor Rodney Bass, Essex County Council's (ECC) cabinet member for highways and transportation, following a spate of crashes involving lorries on the road.

In the past month alone, there have been seven crashes on the A12 involving a total of 27 vehicles. These have resulted in 11 injuries and the death of one young woman.

In March, the Chelmsford-bound stretch of the road was brought to a standstill near Shenfield following a four lorry smash which left four people injured and this time last year, a man was killed when his lorry overturned and caught fire on the London-bound stretch approaching the Brook Street roundabout.

Many haulage firms that use HGVs have raised many concerns about the impact of an overtaking ban, if it is brought in.

What do you think? Are you a truck driver who uses the road regularly? Do you use the A12 as a commuter and think this is a good idea? We want to hear from you, let us know your thoughts!

  1. Seriously this country is a joke!!!! Rodney Bass I'd like you to spend a week out in a lorry to see where the problems lay. Maybe you would start in the very poor driving standard of most car drivers or the ability of most EU lorries passing you at 70 mph which is always a surprise considering the 56mph limit was introduced by the EU was it not?? Finally I'd like you to have a look at the shocking state of the UK Road network to which all motorists and haulage firms contribute millions of pounds too daily yet is falling further and further into disrepair. I'd like to ask why you think an overtaking ban would be any use what so ever you may as well ban all lorries from the UK and use trams or the rail network. The main causes of accidents evolving lorries in the UK are foreign drivers I pass at least 4 accidents a day on the m25 always a foreign lorry hitting a car please before making stupid remarks and suggestions start doing your homework get out and actually look at the road network have a look at the cctv on our roads drive them not in your 80k range rover but in an old 40mph truck you'll soon see the problems and where they lay all your current idea will cause is a lot of grief very late deliveries accidents a lot of haulage firms going out of business and one solid line of lorries spanning the length of the A12.
