Foreign HGV Drivers to Receive Fines

Foreign lorry drivers who put lives at risk by driving tired on British roads will be given on the spot fines in a new move by Roads Minister Stephen Hammond.

It comes after Department of Transport experts closed a loophole which previously prevented foreign drivers from being taken to court because they did not hold a UK address and so could not be issued a court summons.

Since its announcement it has been hailed “a triumph for equality’ by British road haulage campaigners who claim UK lorry drivers had been put at a disadvantage over the “one rule for us and one rule for them” system.

The proposals – which would mean officers could now issue a penalty notices for offences – would also allow enforcement of the new HGV Road User Levy for similar periods. The Levy was introduced earlier this year to ensure foreign hauliers make a fair contribution towards UK revenue.
